Viable alternative, at least to me.

Actually, when I was reading the last book of the trilogy, I had to stop it somewhere at the point where the Patriarch does his sacrifice... and we are led to believe Gerald is dead.

You won't believe _how much_rationalizing I did so as to believe Gerald was not dead till I got back to the book and was finally reassured...
